International Animation Day: 28 October

International Animation Day is observed globally on 28 October every year.

  1. The day celebrates the art of animation and also recognises the artists, scientists and technicians behind animation.
  2. The day was created in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA), an International Animated Film Association, a member of UNESCO.

Luis Arce declared as Bolivia’s President

Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) announced that Luis Arce Catacora, the candidate for the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) party, has won the October 18 presidential elections with 55.1 percent of the votes.

  1. The MAS also obtained absolute majorities in the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, although it did not achieve the two-thirds majority required to carry out constitutional reforms.
  2. This is the first time since 1989 that the country has published the official results of a presidential election in such a short period of time.

Northern Command celebrates 74th Infantry Day on 27 October 2020

74th Infantry Day was celebrated by Northern Command on 27 October with traditional wreath laying ceremony at the Dhruva Shahid Smarak in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir

  1. The Infantry Day is celebrated to commemorate the operations launched by the Indian Army on 27 October 1947 to thwart the Pakistani aggression on the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
  2. On this solemn day, the supreme sacrifices made by the Indian Army in defending the honour and integrity of the nation were remembered by all.

Feni Bridge connecting India and Bangladesh to be completed by December

The 1.8 kilometre long Feni Bridge connecting Sabrum in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh will be completed by December this year.

  1. This was announced by the Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs Minister Nitin Gadkari while laying the foundation stone of nine National Highway projects in Tripura through video conferencing.
  2. The Feni Bridge being built at the cost of Rs. 129 crore will ease the transportation of goods from Chattogram and Kolkata ports.
  3. An integrated check post is also proposed to be built near Sabrum.
  4. The RCC Bridge over Feni will improve connectivity to the international border with Bangladesh.

India, US hold 3rd bilateral two plus two Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi

India and US held the 3rd bilateral two plus two Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi and signed the landmark defence pact BECA.

  1. The signing of BECA is significant as it allows India to use global geospatial maps of the United States for accuracy of stand-off weapons like cruise and ballistic missiles.
  2. From the Indian side, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar led the delegation.
  3. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence Mark Esper led the US delegation.
  4. India and the US signed five agreements in total.

India Post, US Postal Service sign agreement for electronic exchange of customs data

Department of Posts and United States Postal Service, USPS have entered into an agreement for electronic exchange of customs data related to postal shipments exchanged between the two countries.

  1. The agreement will make it possible to transmit and receive electronic data of international postal items prior to their physical arrival at the destination and would enable customs clearance of postal items in advance in line with the evolving global postal framework.
  2. This will also improve the performance of postal services in terms of reliability, visibility and security.
  3. USA is the top export destination for India which is also reflected in exchange of goods through postal channel.

Centre sets up high-level committee to commemorate Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 400th birth anniversary

The Centre set up a high-level committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate the 400th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur.

  1. The mandate of the 70-member committee includes approval of policies, plans, programmes and supervision and guiding the commemoration, besides deciding broad dates for detailed programmes of celebration.
  2. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth of ten Gurus of the Sikh religion.
  3. He founded the city of Anandpur Sahib in Punjab in 1665.
  4. On 24 November 1675, the Guru was publicly beheaded on the orders of Aurangzeb for refusing to accept the authority of Mughal Emperor, at Chandni Chowk in Delhi.

V Prez Venkaiah Naidu launches virtual festival of ‘Parampara Series 2020-National Festival of Music and Dance’

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu launched the virtual festival of ‘Parampara Series 2020-National Festival of Music and Dance’ organized by Natya Tarangini in partnership with the United Nations.

  1. He appreciated Natya Tarangini for organising the ‘Parampara Series’ continuously since past 23 years, and adopting innovative efforts to make it happen for the 24th year, even in difficult times like this.
  2. It may be noted that this festival has been organized to coincide with the World Day for Audio-visual Heritage.

Arjun Munda launches two Centers of Excellence for Tribal Welfare

Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda launched two Centers of Excellence for Tribal Welfare.

  1. These centers were launched in collaboration between the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Art of Living through video conference.
  2. One Center will be engaged in the field of training tribal farmers in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra on sustainable natural farming while the second one will be working towards strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions in 5 districts covering 30 Gram Panchayats and 150 villages of Jharkhand.

Aditya Puri retires, Sashidhar Jagdishan takes over as HDFC Bank MD-CEO

Aditya Puri, who was HDFC Bank managing director and CEO for 26 years, retired from India’s largest private bank.

  1. Sashidhar Jagdishan has taken over the charge.
  2. Jagdishan has been part of the bank since 1996, and played a critical role in supporting the growth trajectory of the bank.
  3. With an overall experience of over 30 years, Jagdishan has extensive knowledge and experience in the fields of banking, finance and economics.
