World COPD Day 2020: 18 November

World COPD Day is observed on the third Wednesday of November every year to raise awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and improve COPD care throughout the world.

  1. World COPD Day 2020 falls on 18 November 2020.
  2. The day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with health care professionals and COPD patient groups throughout the world.
  3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a lung disease that blocks airflow and makes it difficult to breathe.
  4. 2020 theme: Living Well with COPD-Everybody, Everywhere.

World Philosophy Day: 19 November

World Philosophy Day is observed on the third Thursday of November every year.

  1. This year World Philosophy Day falls on 19 November 2020.
  2. The Day encourages academic exchange and highlights the contribution of philosophical knowledge in addressing global issues.
  3. Philosophy is the study of the nature of reality and existence, of what is possible to know, and of right and wrong behaviour.
  4. It comes from the Greek word phílosophía, meaning ‘the love of wisdom.’ It is one of the most important fields of human thought as it aspires to get at the very meaning of life.

World Toilet Day: 19 November

World Toilet Day (WTD) is observed globally on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis.

  1. World Toilet Day celebrates toilets and raises awareness of the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation.
  2. It is about taking action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
  3. The day was established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001 and officially declared by the UN General Assembly in 2013.

India’s AI supercomputer Param Siddhi 63rd among top 500 most powerful non-distributed computer systems in world

India’s Artificial Intelligence supercomputer Param Siddhi has achieved 63rd rank among top 500 most powerful non-distributed computer systems in the world.

  1. The AI system will strengthen application development of packages in areas such as advanced materials, computational chemistry and astrophysics.
  2. It said several packages are being developed under the National Supercomputing Mission for drug design and preventive health care system, flood forecasting package for flood prone metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Patna and Guwahati.
  3. This will accelerate Research and Development in war against COVID-19 through faster simulations, medical imaging, genome sequencing and forecasting and will be a boon for Indian masses and for start-Ups and MSMEs in particular.

India-Luxembourg virtual summit to be chaired by PM Modi & his counterpart

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Luxembourg counterpart Xavier Bettel will hold a virtual summit.

  1. This will be the first stand-alone Summit meeting between India and Luxembourg in the past two decades.
  2. The leaders will discuss the entire spectrum of bilateral relationship, including strengthening of India-Luxembourg cooperation in the post-COVID world.
  3. India and Luxembourg have continued to maintain high level exchanges in the recent past.

Madhya Pradesh government announces ‘Gau Cabinet’ for protection of cows

The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to set up a ‘Gau Cabinet’ for the protection, conservation and promotion of cows in the state.

  1. The Cabinet will comprise the departments of animal husbandry, forests, panchayat and rural development, revenue, home and farmers welfare.
  2. The first meeting of the Cabinet will be held on ‘Gopashtami’ on November 22 at the Cow Sanctuary in Agar-Malwa district named ‘Kamdhenu Gau Abhyaranya.
  3. It is India’s first cow sanctuary which was set up by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Madhya Pradesh government in September 2017.

Himachal Pradesh CM flags off Medical Mobile Unit Jeevan Dhara

In order to provide a complete range of health care services for people living in remote and inaccessible areas of Himachal Pradesh, the state government flagged off the Medical Mobile Unit Jeevan Dhara, from the Ridge in Shimla.

  1. The van would function as a Mobile Primary Health Centre. He said free medical consultancy and screening would be provided to the patients through Jeevan Dhara Mobile Health and Wellness Centre.
  2. Jai Ram Thakur also flagged off TB Detection Vans on the occasion.
  3. The mobile Health and Wellness Van would have basic facilities such as diagnostic, testing facilities for various ailments.
  4. Jeevan Dhara would also have requisite drugs and supplies as prescribed for a Primary Health Centre.

NFDB confers four awards to Assam for success in fishery sector

The National Fisheries Development Board has conferred four awards to Assam for the success in the fishery sector.

  1. Assam has got the best state award under the category of best hilly and North Eastern state. Assam Apex Cooperative Fish Marketing and Processing Federation Limited (FISHFED) has been selected under the category of best hilly and North eastern government organization.
  2. On the other hand, Nagaon district has been selected under best hilly and North Eastern district category while a Nalbari based farmer Amal Medhi is selected under hilly and North Eastern fish farmer category.
  3. The awards will be given on 21st of this month in New Delhi.

BSF organizes Para-Cycling expedition ‘Infinity Ride 2020’

Border Security Force (BSF) is organizing a Para-Cycling expedition “Infinity Ride 2020", in association with Aditya Mehta Foundation.

  1. The expedition commenced from Srinagar will culminate at Southern tip of India at Kanyakumari Tamil Nadu on 31st December this year.
  2. The expedition is a part of national campaign to psychologically empower BSF’s operational amputees and other Divyangjan (specially-abled).
  3. 28 participants are taking part in more than 3800 kms cycling, traversing the entire country.

Sudeep Tyagi announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Indian cricketer, Sudeep Tyagi has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

  1. The 33-year-old had played for the Indian national cricket team in four ODIs and a lone T20I as a fast bowler.
  2. Apart from this, the right-arm medium-fast bowler had also featured in 14 games in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Former Goa Governor Mridula Sinha passes away

Former Governor of Goa and veteran BJP leader, Mridula Sinha passed away. She was the first woman Governor of Goa.

  1. She was also a proficient writer, making extensive contributions to the world of literature as well as culture. She has served as the head of the BJP’s women’s wing and Chairperson of Central Social Welfare Board in the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
  2. A native of Muzaffarpur, Sinha will be remembered for starting cultural events called ‘Chaand ke Saath’ in the lawns of Governor House.
